The legend of the Moretto, a traditional piece of jewellery from Venetian Renaissance period, says that the noblewomen would have the features of their favourite moor represented in the Moretto, since having African people working in positions of service was considered a sign of distinction. The Moretto, nevertheless has Muslim origins, in fact the name and the shape derive from the term moor, which at the time meant Muslim, or more broadly, referred to the Saracen pirates. It was introduced to Venice through the continuous commercial and cultural contact between seamen.
Our Moretti are all handcrafted. We carry them in polished silver, gold-plated silver and in gold adorned with gemstones with the head carved from ebony.
